What is your greatest goal?
In Philippians chapter 3, Paul tells us that he had every reason to boast in things of the flesh. He says in verse 1 to 6 that his status among the people as a Pharisee was reason for great confidence. Yet in verses 7 & 8 Paul renounces such things. He states; ‘But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him…’ For Paul, the greatest goal worth pursuing was that of knowing Christ. Everything else, Paul says, is worthless.
Paul’s viewpoint is completely counter to western culture. Society tells us that if want to be satisfied, we need to pursue things which we think will make us happy. We are told to pursue things such as success, money, relationships, family etc. Yet Paul reminds us that there is only one thing in life worth pursuing – to know Christ Jesus.
Its an important question to ask on a daily basis; just what is the most important thing that your heart desires to pursue this week? As Paul states in verse 9, we have access to a relationship with the living God simply through faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ. If such grace truly captures our hearts, then knowing Christ will become our top priority.
