CrossLife website: part of a global presence
by Matt Hunt
Welcome to our new CrossLife website! Some suggest the changing nature of the world has left the church behind. However such a view forgets how the church has remained a significant part of the world for over 2000 years. Generally for good, but sadly sometimes for ill, the church has never been broken despite enemy and culture coming against her in every generation. Even the ocean cannot avoid its presence! The statue “The Christ of the Abyss”, was built in 1954 on the sea floor in the bay in front of San Fruttuoso, between Camogli and Portofino, in Italy by sculptor Guido Galletti. It was placed by the Italian Navy about 15 meters deep, with the help of many divers. The hands of Christ, addressed to the surface (or heaven) are in a sign of peace. It is 2.50 meters high and was cast with campaign and commemorative medals, parts of ships (even American submarine propellers donated by the U.S. Navy) and bells. Due to increasing amounts of corrosion, the statue was removed from the water and restored in 2003.
