Do you love me?

Do you love me?

The human heart has an inbuilt need for love and acceptance, what great joy and comfort we receive when we understand the amazing, unconditional (Gk. Agape) love God has for us. He promises us as His children, that he will never leave us or forsake us. Our attempts to love fall far short of this…

On Tuesday it is Valentine’s Day, not a tradition that I adhere to, but one that has become increasingly popular over the years. It is seen as a chance to express our love for someone, and to perhaps receive some in return.

We live in a world today where ‘instant’ and ‘disposable’ are a way of life… even ‘love’ seems to have fallen prey to this. If there’s not instant attraction, instant connection, or if we don’t feel comfortable around someone, we write off the possibility of even beginning to explore a relationship and if things get too hard in a relationship we simply walk away. Praise God that His love is nothing like this…

Have you given any thought to the fact that God desires to be loved as well? He desires it so much that He made it His very first commandment, as summarised by Jesus in Matthew 22:37-38 “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength”.

A daily devotional I recently read is entitled “God’s longing” and it is written as if God was expressing a deep unmet desire to just be loved; “Comfort Me, awhile, by letting me know that you would seek Me just to dwell in My Presence, to be near Me, not even for teaching, not for material gain, not even for a message – but for Me.

The Longing of the human heart to be loved for itself is something caught from the Great Divine Heart”. (God Calling, Ed. A.J. Russell)

I encourage you to express your love for God this week in thought, word and deed without expecting anything in return… and watch the Lord love you right back!
