Love so amazing
From a small book I picked up in Dubai, ‘Poems From The Desert’ comes the heart-rending story of a mother’s incredible love for her son, whose father died while he was still an infant. The woman had to take lowly servant’s work for them to survive… “Hoping nights’ promise would someday be fulfilled.” After years of struggle, and the boy now grown into a man, she says, “The day I awaited had finally arrived.” She fully anticipated that he, in turn, would take care of her. Instead, he threw her out of their home!
In despair and grief, she shared her lament with a noble gentleman, who was “enraged by the cruelty and injustice brought upon her.” He took it upon himself to deal with this “beast” and in no uncertain terms, the man starts to reprimand the son, whom he felt was totally unworthy, and callously indifferent to his mother’s plight.
“My words were interrupted by her pleading voice:
“What are you doing?” she asked with a startled tone.
“I am his Mother, sir, do not condemn him.
How can a mother’s heart oppress her own child?”
The poem concludes…
‘How vast is her forgiveness, how tender her heart?
When empowered she pardoned and forgot his cruel deeds.’
We marvel at the great grace and love that this mother extended to her ungrateful scoundrel of a son.
Just as we can be confident of a greater, infinite love.
How deep the Father’s love for us, How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son, To make a wretch his treasure…
A line from the great old hymn; ‘And can it be’ has buried itself in my mind of late. Emptied Him-self of all but love. Do you ever wonder, “Is it possible that I could truly be like Jesus in nature?” Devoid of selfishness, self-preservation and pride. Humanly speaking – no way! However, the Apostle Paul assures us in Philippians 1:6, CEV “God is the one who began this good work in you, and I am certain that he won’t stop before it is complete on the day that Jesus Christ returns.” This is of enormous comfort to me, and a wondrous hope.
