Loving Counsel from the Lord
Proverbs, also called The Book Of Proverbs, is an Old Testament book of “wisdom” writing.
Proverbs 1:1-15 says this:
“The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:
To know wisdom and instruction, To discern the sayings of understanding, To receive instruction in wise behaviour, Righteousness, justice, and integrity; To give prudence to the naive, To the Youth knowledge and discretion, A wise person will hear and increase in learning, And a person of understanding will acquire wise counsel, To understand a proverb and a saying, The words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
I’ve been behaving like ‘Martha’ this week, worrying and upset by many things. I have been presuming that certain things are in play, and to coin a phrase, “I have not been happy Jan!”
I’ve been struggling with the thoughts in my head, and coupled with guilt for having some of those thoughts, I can empathise with Paul in his letter to the Romans, and I too can say…
“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” (Romans 7:15).
I finally sat more intentionally with the Lord and my bible, asked God to look into my heart, and began to read through proverbs… and then He spoke… Don’t you love it when He speaks? I do.
“Through presumption comes nothing but strife, But with those who receive counsel is wisdom.” (Proverbs 13:10)
Now that’s loving counsel from the Lord.
When we are hurt, angry or disappointed, let’s not presume, lets love first, and take the time to discover what’s really going on before we react or respond.
